
Sambar is a very popular vegetarian dish in south india and liked by people all across India. Sambar has different variations and differ from state to state. Sambar is a great accompaniment with south Indian breakfast items like dosas, idlis etc and also goes well with rice.
The main ingredient used in sambar is “sambar powder”. Sambar powder is available off shelf in almost every grocery store under different brand names.
Food savory is pleased to share with you the recipe of the traditional Sambar Powder.
Ingredients
Red Chillies – 40 numbers
Gram daal – 1/2 small cup
Toor daal – 1/4 small cup
Methi (Fenugreek) seeds – 1 big tbsp
Dhaniya (Coriander) seeds – 2 small cups
Curry leaves – 20
Oil – 1 tsp
Method of preparation
Heat oil in a pan. Put all the ingredients in the pan & fry till light brown. You can get the aroma of the ingredients at this stage. Allow it to cool and grind into a fine powder in a mixer. Store it in an airtight container.
Note: In this sambar powder, Hing (asafetida) is not added. Hence while making sambar, please add Hing (asafetida) powder and also red chilli powder if u want to make the Sambar more spicier.
