Kootu currykootu curry

Kootu curry is a thick gravy side dish made with a mix of vegetables and pulses. 


Dry green peas (soaked overnight) – ¼ cup

White chick peas (soaked overnight)- ¼ cup

Yam (cut into small pieces)- 1 cup

Raw banana (raw kerala banana or nenthrakkaya preferred) cut into small pieces -1 cup

Ashgourd (cut into small pieces)– 1 cup

Pumpkin (cut into small pieces)- 1 cup

Coconut (shredded)- 11/2 cup

Urad daal – 1 tbsp

Jaggery – 1 tbsp

Asafoetida- 1 pinch

Dry red chillies -2-3

Black pepper corns – 1tsp

Jeera – 1tsp

Ghee – 1 tsp

Turmeric powder – 1 tsp

Coconut Oil- 1 tbsp

Curry leaves – a few

Salt to taste

Method of preparation

Cook the vegetables and pulses together in a pressure cooker adding salt and turmeric powder.

Roast the red chillies and pepper corns in ghee and grind to a powder.

Keep aside the ghee in the kadai.

Mix this powder along with asafoetida and jaggery  in the cooked vegetables and bring to boil till the mixture becomes thick.

Heat oil in the kadai along with the remaining ghee. Add urad daal .Once the urad daal turns golden brown, add the curry leaves and shredded coconut and roast till golden brown. Transfer this into the curry and mix well. Yummy kootu curry is ready to be served. Kootu curry is served as a major accompaniment in Onam Sadya and is an important part of Onam Recipes.
