Mixed Lentil Idli

It is a variety of idli made with Rice and variety of lentils. Mixed Lentil Idli is usually served with  sambar, Coconut Chutney or gun powder.


Par Boiled Rice (Idli rice/Ponni rice) – 1 cup

Toor dal – 1/3 cup

Chana dal – 1/3 cup

Moong dal – 1/3 cup

Urad dal (without skin) – 1 cup

Fenugreek (methi) seeds – 1 teaspoon

Black pepper corns – 1 teaspoon

Red chillies – 3 to 4

Green chillies – 1 or 2

Curry leaves – a few

Hing(asafoetida) powder – 1 tea spoon

Salt to taste

Method of preparation (Batter making)

Soak urad dal separately and all the other ingredients separately for around 4 hours. Grind urad dal with water till it becomes fluffy. Grind the rest  of the lentils to a coarse paste. Add salt and Hing and mix both the batter together. This batter has to be fermented overnight and used.

Grease the idli mould with gingely oil and pour the batter in the moulds and steam it for 20 minutes.

Hot Mixed Lentil Idlis are now ready to be served! Serve the hot idlis with Coconut Chutney, Sambar or Gun powder.
