Chena Kadi (Elephant Yam curry)chena kadi

This is a traditional South Indian dish (especially popular with Tamil Brahmins) made with Elephant Yam, Ginger and Green chillies.

Yam -1/2 kg (sliced)cut yam pieces

Boiled Toor Dal- 1 cup

Tamarind-1 lemon sized ball

Grated coconut-1/2 cup

Ginger- 1 big piece (crushed)

Green chillies-1 (slit)

Jaggery -1/2 tsp

Turmeric powder-1/2 tsp

Hing (Asafoetida) powder-1/2 tsp

Salt- to taste

Curry leaves-a few

Chopped coriander leaves

For seasoning

Oil-2 tsp

Mustard seeds-1/2 tsp

Urad Dal-1/2 tsp

Chana Dal-1 tsp

Red chillies-1

Method of preparation

Cook Toor Dal well. In a pressure cooker add the cooked Dal, yam pieces, crushed ginger, green chillies, tamarind pulp and salt. Pressure cook this till the yam pieces are well cooked .

After the steam settles down add curry leaves, coriander leaves, jaggery, Hing powder and grated coconut to this and allow it to boil for 3 minutes. The curry should be of thick consistency.

Note that since yam is starchy the curry would get thicker when it cools down. So leave the consistency accordingly.

Heat oil in a pan for seasoning and add mustard seeds , urad dal, chana  dal, red chillies  & let the mustard seeds crackle.

Add the seasoning to the curry.

This curry is an excellent side dish for steamed rice.
